Fried Green Tomatoes


  • 4 large green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for some heat)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges for serving


  1. Prep the Tomatoes:
  • Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch rounds.
  1. Soak in Buttermilk:
  • Place the tomato slices in a shallow dish and pour buttermilk over them. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, allowing the buttermilk to tenderize the tomatoes.
  1. Prepare the Coating:
  • In one bowl, mix together flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • In another bowl, place cornmeal.
  1. Coat the Tomatoes:
  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat (enough to submerge the tomato slices).
  • Take each tomato slice from the buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, dip back into the buttermilk, and coat with cornmeal. Ensure each slice is well coated.
